1st Top European Athletes Sumó Training Camp

European Sumó Union organized the 1st Top European Athletes Sumó Training Camp between Tue 2-Nov-1999 and Tue 16-Nov-1999. The training camp took place at Nihon University in Tókyó, Japan.

International Sumó Federation arranged the stay of the European athletes at Nihon University and took care of room and board of the athletes.

The camp, which should be a regular yearly event from now on, was intended to be a training opportunity for the top European sumó wrestlers in all the weight classes. The athletes were and will be selected based on their PORIZ rating and only the top athletes in each category based on their rating are eligible to participate in the camp.

This year the following athletes qualified:
Levan EBANOIDZE, Georgia, open, rating: 775
Jörg BRÜMMER, Germany, heavyweight, rating: 872
Marek PACZKÖW, Poland, middleweight, rating: 715
Svetoslav BINEV, Bulgaria, lightweight, rating: 823

Svetoslav Binev could not participate, since he had to study for university exams at the time, therefore, only the other three men participated. ShiroiKuma, European Sumó Union's Sports Director, led the European team as coach. Günter Romenath, President of the European Sumó Union, came to Japan as the head of the delegation.

Apart from the official team, seven more athletes participated in the team: three German men (Torsten Scheibler, Alex Czerwinski, and Eduard Grams) and three German women came on costs of the German Sumó Association, and Yuri Golubovski of Russia also attended the camp on his own costs.
